3Great sound, Poor Build Quality
By K. Krasnesky
I preordered these headphones last summer as a treat to myself since prior i was using bad headphones. I really wanted to invest in a decent headset for gaming. After reading about the 7h's and knowing how well the 5h's were since my friend has owned them for a few years now, i decided to splurge 130 on this headset.

I really liked the way they looked, the black matte finish with the light chrome accents looked pretty sweet. I liked the detachable cable, and the fact that the headphone can be broken down into 3 pieces to travel with, although thats hardly a concern for me. And the 2 sets of earcups are another nice little feature.

The sound quality for gaming was quite good, I really appreciated how well they isolated outside noise so you can focus more on whats happening in the game. The bass was there but it seems to be less forward than the mids and the highs, but i believe it was done intentionally so you can hear footsteps and gunfire more clearly. No complaint there. Hooked up with the 7.1 virtual surround sound (if you're buying the usb version) they pinpoint direction noise quite well for a stereo headset.

My biggest issue, and ultimately the deal breaker on this headset is the build quality. At first they apear to be well built, great headphones, much higher build quality than siberias in my oppinion. However, there is a very common issue with the middle headpiece bridge. Basically the middle bridge piece was not built to handle the stress that is being put on the connector pieces, which are made of plastic. Overtime (usually around 1-5months) the middle piece starts the crack and breakdown due to the stress of having it stretch to fit your head while in use. So after a few months of wearing them, they will stop playing sound in one of the earcups, most commonly the right earcup. I wish they had made the connectors a bit more durable, seeing that they have to deal with a lot of stress when worn. You'll notice if you do own them that the headset seems to bend where the connectors are, which is a major problem.

Thankfully Steelseries support was superb when it came to replacing them but alas, the same problem has happened to me again with the replacement and as much as I love their mice and mousepads, I cannot recommend their flagship headset. Maybe I'll get 5h's.

What seems to be a major problem with the 7h's does not exist with the 5h's. They use the same headband bridge piece so it made me wonder why. You'll notice though that 5h's have reinforced the connectors with plastic circlets on the connectors to each earcup, the 7h's do not have these.

Hopefully this review was helpful, i respect steelseries but I do not recommend this particular headset.

5Simply Amazing.
By Arthur Aszman
Let me start off by saying I have always used headphones - not speakers. All that time though, I have always been using the 10 dollar ones you buy at Walmart. After having gone through around 100 of those due to shoddy craftsmanship and having a speaker break, or the mic cut out - I decided to aim high. I first bought a pair of Zowie Hammer - but I was really put off by the microphone and how bulky it was. On top of that, it was uncomfortable at the top of the head. It's not a *bad* headset, but I was looking for something a lot more sleek - so I finally went to Steelseries.

Putting the headset on for the first time felt like putting on a pair of my favorite broken-in shoes. First off, compared to the Zowie - they are *amazingly* light, you won't believe it. They also come with a "Pleathery" earcup already on the speakers, but they offer a foam replacement. Let's talk about the Pleather though - this pleather is very uncommonly soft - something you can't see from the pictures. Even after hours of gaming, I didn't even notice they were there. The light weight and very high comfort means they fit and feel as snug as a hat. One final touch - even insignificant to most - is how the microphone works. When not being used, it can retract back into the headset as if it doesn't exist. *However* when it is in use, it comes out *just* far enough to get good sound, but not far enough to block your mouth. So; in late night gaming sessions you can drink your Mountain Dew totally unimpeded by the microphone.

Now let's talk about craftsmanship. Right out of the box you can tell they had the late night gamer in mind. In the past, half my earphones broke because they would get caught on my chair and they'd rip off my head. Steelseries 7h is completely *modular*. From the wire that connects to the computer to the headset itself, it all comes apart. Too much tension on the wire and it simply disconnects from the headset. Now - if you're like me - you might be worried that it could be too loose and fall out. I've tested that - even on the floor, I can pick the headset up by the wire without any feeling that it might fall out. Now, if you're really a skeptic you might say " what about the wire itself? " --- and I'm going to sound like a late-night commercial, but there really is *MORE*. The wire itself is made out of very thick braided cord, and seems very durable.

Finally, the sound. To be honest, I'm no sound expert - but to say I don't notice a difference would be completely laughable. Even compared to the Zowie Hammer, you'll hear sounds you've never heard before in games. I was completely amazed by how much these earphones picked up, and you will be too.

Let me be real - if you're looking to buy a fantastic headset - BUY THESE.
After finding steelseries, I'll never ever ever ever go back to walmart.

5This is the BEST Gaming/Music headset that you can get at this price!
By Foxalive
Short Summary - This is the BEST Gaming/Music headset that you can get at this price! You cant get wrong with it.

Detailed Review -
First of all let me tell you a little about myself. I am a gamer and I also used to compete back in the school days in FPS games (counter strike). So I very well understand what is the importance of sounds in game. I used to be one of the top 200 CS players in US.
I am also a person now days who listens to music literally all day. So I also have good sense of music and I can very easily differentiate between good and a bad headset.
I also have used many headsets in the past and so I think I can provide a very good opinion.

So here we go -
Why are these headsets good -
1) Sound -
Music - Amazing sound quality for both gaming and music. Bass is strong, you will literally lose your self while listening to your favorite music on these headsets. All instruments are clear and music becomes a joy to listen to and you will enjoy every moment of it. Like I said, in this price range, they are best.

Gaming - You will be able to clearly hear the foot steps from different directions and will be able to make proper decisions. Also this will give you a very clear and diff sounds for guns and you will be able to know what kind of shot was fired where. This headset is like a hack for people who have never used sound in their gameplay. Your game will be elevated at a new higher level if you haven't used a decent headset in past.
Not just FPS games but all games in general. Try playing some horror or thriller game with these headsets like Dead space, FEAR, Bioshock etc. I have played and I can tell you that you will actually feel as if you are "there" in game alone and someone is going to jump on you. Bioshock is actually a good example specially the initial sequence (if you have played), you will hear people crying, shouting and screaming in different directions. It really creates a very gloomy and freaky atmosphere (dont forget to turn off the lights though ;p).

2) Build Quality - I have to say that quality is very solid and top notch. I have used Steelseries 5H V2 in the past and loved them. These are definite upgrade from previous version. Built is solid and they look well made and of good material. They feel way way better than G35 logitech headsets (used in past also). ** read my update for durability at bottom.**

3) Mic - Mic sounds great. Sound is very clear and no issues at all. One thing I love about mic is that it is retractable and this is one hell of a unique feature that most of people tend to ignore. One doesnt need a mic hanging out all times, specially when you are listening to music or traveling. In fact it becomes a trouble when you want to pack or also looks kinda bad when you are using it to listen music from your music player. With this headset, mic is almost invisible and only comes out when you pull it out. I really love this feature. And due to the same reason mic is also protected from any kind of accidental damage.

4) Design - This is another feature why this headset wins. You can break this headset into 4 different pieces and can pack it in any bag without hesitation. Nothing happens to the headset, just assemble all parts and use it again. This helps me a lot while traveling. After listening to music in plane, I just put them in bags and sit comfortably and not worry about damaging my headsets.

5) Comfort - these are probably one of the most comfortable headsets I have ever used. the only thing that beats the comfort is Bose and they are twice the price. they come with 2 different kind of ear cups, leather and cloth. Use cloth in a place where there isnt a lot of noise like your home. Use leather when you want some kind of noise cancellation like a plane, LAN party, crowed place like public transport. I have to say that they are much more comfortable than G35 (G35 imo are very tight on your ears and you sweat a lot. I also feel that as if I am sitting in a closed room while using G35s. I dont like that feeling).

6) Connections - this is one another strong point. If you buy G35, you will only be able to use them for gaming. you cant use them to listen to music on your mp3 player but these headsets can be used with anything. It also comes with extra cord which is always handy when you want to sit at a distance while playing.

Finally - As mentioned above, no other headset can come close to these headsets in this price range. This is a quality product which you will love whenever you will use it.

*****
Update after using it for more than a year -
I have taken these headphones for multiple international trips, I don't handle them with care, I just throw them in my laptop bag and they are perfect. I am not sure what the other user is talking about poor build quality. I use these headphones everyday for gaming and taking and they are not only holding it very well but there has not been even a single issue. I will highly recommend these to anyone.
